Bridge decks, piers and substructures can face chlorides, freeze-thaw cycles, abrasion and repeated wetting. Microsilica is often considered when the design needs a dense matrix and controlled transport of water and ions.
A purchasing specification should do more than name the material. It should define the required grade, relevant test methods, batch documentation and handling form. The concrete specification must separately address air entrainment, water-binder ratio, curing, crack control and field acceptance.
