Chloride exposure is a central durability concern for reinforced concrete in coastal and offshore environments. Microsilica can contribute to lower permeability by filling fine voids and reacting with calcium hydroxide when it is properly dispersed and cured.
The material does not replace sound durability design. Water-binder ratio, total binder content, cover depth, curing, crack width, aggregate quality and compatible admixtures remain critical. Excessive or poorly dispersed microsilica can also create workability and finishing problems.
